Welcome to the Kabana

Welcome to Kashawn’s Kabana.

First, I want to thank you for being here.

Second, you’re probably wondering where the hell I got the name for this blog. When I was younger, back in the days of MySpace and AOL Instant Messenger, I had series where I “interviewed” my friends via instant message and posted the back-and-forth exchange on the as a blog post. I thought the name, especially cabana being spelled with a “k” was a cheeky nod to my name. I think I had dreams of being a journalist or maybe a talk show host. The inspiration for why has long since died somewhere in the depths of my mind, but the name stayed. And here we are.

This won’t be some sort of interview platform (at least not entirely, because I have some cool ideas), but rather a blog of sorts. I think it’s important for writers to keep up people who may read their work, whether that’s one person or one million people. What I envision for this iteration of “Kashawn’s Kabana” to be is a weekly (hopefully) blog. I plan to include news and publication links the week they drop, musings on what I’m doing, reading, working on, thinking about, etc.

This, I have to admit, is a huge undertaking for me. I am so busy all the time. Not only do I work full-time as Prison Journalism Project’s audience engagement fellow and teach part-time with Gotham Writers Workshop, but I am also supplementing my MA in English and Creative Writing with an MFA in Creative Writing. The difference, you ask? The MFA is a terminal degree, which means I would be better qualified to teach at colleges and universities should I desire in the future. But this blog is something I’ve thought about doing for some time, especially since so many of the classes in my MFA program talk about maintaining an author’s platform.

There’s no better time than now, I guess. Like I said, I have some cool ideas for stuff here in the future, but I don’t want to get too ahead of myself.

So, for now just stay tuned. I have set a weekly reminder on my phone to blog every week. Let’s see how this goes.
